Sustainable Manufacturing Process
Sustainable Environmental Management
When it comes to environmental management, Crammix complies with stringent industry standards and legislation. Through our Environmental Policy we adhere to best practice throughout every stage of the manufacturing process, even up to the rehabilitation of mined areas. This includes following prescribed air quality and waste management procedures, as well as innovative measures to reduce energy consumption.
To control the impact of dust and noise on the local surrounds, we have also invested state-of-the-art dust suppression systems. This includes keeping the dust from our roads, storage and mining areas at bay during the drier months, by means of spraying recycled water. Given the close proximity of the Crammix quarries to the brick making plants, we also benefit from minimal transport costs and reduced air emissions.
Sustainable Waste Management
Putting back into the environment” is the core of Crammix Bricks waste management philosophy. We invest in modern manufacturing processes and more efficient kilns to minimise waste during manufacture. Many of our production methodologies have also been converted to use waste coal and recycled materials from other industries. This includes the use of biodegradable products and packaging materials.
We also work closely with a specialist waste management company to remove recyclable waste; for conversion into other usable products. An on-site crushing facility has also been installed to recycle burnt brick waste into a sub-base, for reuse in civil and infrastructural developments, such as roads, concrete, landscape features as well as the re-manufacture of bricks.
Rehabilitation Ensures Future Sustainability
In line with best environmental practice, we are also committed to the restoration of former mining sites once they have been decommissioned. Government-approved plans are in place to transform these areas back to their natural state. This includes re-vegetation and surface contouring, as well as storm water management, conversion of the quarries to lakes and topsoil rehabilitation.
This approach has ensured that we meet, and in many instances exceed the relevant statutory requirements. The discovery of the Mountain Dahlia at our brickworks is one such example of how we go "above and beyond”. Working in partnership with the Cape Nature Conservation, every measure was taken to ensure the survival of this rare indigenous flower, as the only other known location for this species is to be found is on Table Mountain.
