Crammix has made giant leaps in recent years, concentrating on products of high technical specifications. The entire production has come under consistent review with the upgrading of the tunnel kilns, installation of drier extensions, new automated setting and preparation plant, until Crammix has become the acknowledged technological leader in clay brick production in the Western Cape. It is because of this technological advancement and growth that Crammix is one of the major economic players in the Western Cape. Clay brick manufacture involves a great deal of engineering expertise and not a little art. The clays are mined right next to the factory, crushed, mixed with water, blended for colour, the bricks formed and cut in the computer-controlled extruder and cutter, and stacked on kiln cars for drying. Then they are automatically fed into the drier and tunnel kiln on two trains of 36 kiln cars each a 100m long. Between 3 000 and 5 000 brick units are stacked on each car depending on type. After drying and firing at 1 120 degrees centigrade, they are cooled, sorted, strapped and branded ready for delivery on site. The production process, from extrusion of the clay through cutting and bevelling to precision setting is all controlled by computers.
